The Culture of Portland & Where the Light Comes in

August 21, 2019

If you have visited or lived in Portland, Oregon, you know it’s a completely different culture than any other.

7 Unique things about Portland that I've discovered:

  1. One of the city’s slogans is “Keep Portland weird.”

  2.  Vegan/vegetarian friendly

  3.  You don’t pump your own gas.

  4. Cannabis is now delivered to your door.

  5.  No sales tax

  6. Homeless tents are on every corner.

  7. The bicyclists know what they’re doing more than the drivers.

What I personally love about my city

  1. The coffee is off the charts- You’ll never go back to Starbucks.

  2. The view - Even when you are in the downtown area, the hills and trees are surrounding in the distance. On a non-cloudy day, you may even see Mt. Hood.

  3. The vibes & creativity The coffee, atmosphere, fashion, and the creatives are a piece of art to me. The weirder the style, the better.

  4.  Local everythingOne of my favorite things to do in my down time is to hit all the thrift shops, and meet the local artists and owners. Even the ice-cream is local. Salt & Straw comes straight from heaven ya’ll. Anything local, I love it.

Getting down to the core & identity of Portland

What’s underneath the surface of this city? Portland is also known to carry darkness, outcasts, and brokenness, BUT I am here to communicate a heavenly perspective of God’s vision and heart for this city.

I don’t want to give the darkness too much credit because the truth is that the blood of Jesus covers this entire city.

The past year I’ve lived in Portland, I have witnessed hearts being filled with the Spirit of God. I have seen where confusion, fear, insanity, death, and heaviness once was present, actually bow down at the feet of Jesus.

In Heaven’s eyes, Portland is:

  1. A hotspot for revival, worship and discipleship.

  2. Where the presence of God rests and the glory of God is spread throughout the city.

  3. A place where fatherlessness is being redeemed.

  4. Where there is injustice, the sovereignty and goodness of God reigns.

  5. Where people will be set free and delivered.

  6.  Where followers of Jesus will not run away but confront the darkness, and stand on the front lines.

  7. A place of unity between the churches.I have never experienced such unity and partnership in the body of Christ. I partner with various ministries and churches contending for one purpose -to share the simple gospel and proclaim Portland as saved.

  8. Where pastors, evangelists, teachers, prophets, and apostles will rise up out of the normal, safe Christian lifestyle and begin to stand in the gap for our city.

  9. A place where the sleepers will wake up and know they are sons and daughters of the living God!

A friend of mine once caught me agreeing that Portland is a “dark” city. My friend responded by saying that when I do that, I am coming in agreement that it is Portland’s identity.

I don’t want Portland’s identity to be known as “dark”, but that it is filled with the presence of God and that the creatives will tap into how God wired them and bring glory to God. So now, I watch my words and what I agree with.

Will you agree with me that the power of God is doing a mighty work in the city of Portland, Oregon?

My friends in the PNW, if you believe that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life, we need what you carry here in Portland, Oregon.

Now is not the time to sit on the sidelines. Now is the time to rise up.  You have the power to bring heaven to earth and transform the city with your declaration, voice, and worship.

I am calling out all business minded people, the stay at home moms, the influencers, the children, the entertainers, the educators, the creatives, the visionaries, the musicians, pastors, prophets, evangelists, teachers, and apostles.

The kingdom of God is advancing and YOU ARE A PART OF IT.
