Halloween Invites the Culture of Death

October 22, 2019

When I first moved to Portland, Oregon, I experienced much culture shock. There were several lifestyle habits I removed from my life- celebrating Halloween was one of them.

I’m writing this article to share my experience of why I changed my mind about celebrating Halloween.

Halloween is celebrated every day in Portland, but it is even more highly praised during the fall season.

Celebrating the holiday of death has been very successful throughout the centuries, making around 8 billion dollars this year.

In Portland, you see either Halloween naturally blend into culture or you see it stick out like a sore thumb.

The location where I live, witchcraft is constantly in my face.

You are probably thinking, “Are you serious, Victoria? Halloween is harmless. Witches and magic are only in the movies.”

The idea of witches and warlocks had to come from somewhere before it appeared in the movies. There is a creator behind the idea and I’m certain it didn’t come from heaven.

There is a spiritual battle going on behind what our natural eyes can see.

Satan, known as the father of lies, is strategically trying to deceive those on earth. He has been the father of deception dating back to the garden.

2 Corinthians 4:4 uncovers the scheme of the enemy that relates to what we are experiencing in our culture today.

“The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”

Witchcraft is mentioned in the Bible many times where pagan practices are brought up.

Jesus and His disciples cast out demons.

You see, Jesus didn’t fear or avoid those involved in darkness.

Simon, once known to be a sorcerer eventually became baptized, filled with the spirit, and a follower of Jesus in Acts 8.

Isaiah 8: 19-20 clearly confronts the idea of partnering with mediums and spiritualists.

“When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritualism, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? Consult God’s instruction and the testimony of warning. If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn.”

Believe it or not, witchcraft has not disappeared today.

Witchcraft may be hidden or not talked about in the Bible belt area of our nation but on the west coast, it is clearly displayed in every area of influence.

Shortly after setting foot in Oregon, I realized that Halloween is much more than just dressing up, attending a party, or carrying around a basket asking for candy.

When we partake in this holiday with our actions, we may end up finding ourselves agreeing with the culture of death rather than life.

History behind Halloween

Pope Gregory IV decreed that November 1st  would be known as “ All Saints’ Day or All Hallows’ Day.”

This day was to celebrate all the saints who were martyred. October 31st became known as All Hallows’ Evening.

Around the 3rd century B.C., before Pope Gregory declared November 1st as a holiday for the new year, the ancient Celtic Druids celebrated the new year in another way.

The Celts believed the idea that ghosts, evil spirits, and witches roamed around the earth especially on the night of the 31st.

Evil spirits were released and given the ability to play tricks on those living in the natural.

That is where the idea of costumes, trick or treat, and masks came from- to hide from the evil spirits roaming around.

Wearing a similar costume/mask that looked like one of the spirits was meant to confuse and fool the spirits.

Jack-O lanterns carved from potatoes, gourds, and turnips were also used to keep the spirits away.

This day in the ancient times was known as a day of fear and death.

The Druids in Ireland had another reason for wearing the masks and costumes.

Druids were the legal authorities during the ancient Celtic times that wore several hats as priests, teachers, judges, and magicians.

The Druids wore costumes to attract spirits and open a portal to receive the supernatural power from the specific animal worn.

The Druids worshipped “Samhain”- the lord of the dead. It was told that the night before the new year, Samhain sought out those on earth who died evil lives to then decide what animal form the dead would become the following year.

To receive less of a punishment for the dead who lived evil lives, the Druids believed that praying to Sahmain, giving him gifts, and sacrifices would make Samhain happy.

This intentional act invited darkness.

Witchcraft in Oregon

My experience in Oregon has opened my eyes to the reality that witchcraft is praised in the culture in the Pacific North West.

There are various normal, “hipster” art shops I’ve walked into in Portland that have embraced witchcraft by selling brooms, tarot cards, crystals, and witchcraft jokes on paper cards intermixed with normal trendy products.

The art may look harmless because it’s trendy, but that is how the devil deceives people.

I walked into a popular bookstore here in Portland and noticed that across from the Christian book section was all things related to witchcraft, pagan practices, magic, and how to perform real spells.

Halloween, witchcraft, and the occult are all related.

What to do with this information if you are a believer?

Do not fear.

There is a difference between giving the darkness/the enemy credit and being informed of the strategies of the enemy.

There is resurrection power inside of you- Jesus Christ.

The power of Jesus conquers the spirit of death and fear.

Read Psalm 91.

You are covered by the blood of Jesus.

Pray for those involved in witchcraft in your city.

Go with two or three people on prayer walks.

Matthew 18:20- “For where two or three gathered in my name, there am I with them.”

Ask the Holy Spirit for a strategy from heaven how to pray over the land, cities, buildings, and people in your area.

2 Chronicles 2:14

“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

Halloween is not the only time when witchcraft is practiced, but it is a time where the practices come into the light.

I’m not here to condemn you if you celebrate Halloween. I get it.  I used to attend Halloween events and trick or treated with friends.

I am just here to inform, share the facts, and to expose the darkness. I want to give you the opportunity to decide for yourselves if you want to partake in the popular holiday that began centuries ago that has the potential to give the enemy a foothold in culture, families, and the church.
